ENERGY POSITIVE ROOFING SYSTEM
HORRY COUNTY SCHOOLS
LOCATION: MYRTLE BEACH, NC
REI Engineers was hired by SfL+a Architects to specify a roofing system for 5 new Horry County Schools, constructed to achieve elements of Net Zero Energy Buildings design/certification. REI provided engineered designs for all materials waterproofing the roof, including, but not limited to: general roofing; roof insulation; flashing roof penetrations, structures, + equipment; roof to wall intersection flashing, building expansion joint waterproofing + parapet waterproofing. REI also provided submittal reviews, weekly quality assurance visits, RFI responses, punch list, and final inspections on all 5 schools throughout the construction process.
REI specified + detailed the roofing system to be installed above the metal roof decking and hollow core concrete deck panels, featuring a modified bitumen vapor barrier to hollow core concrete deck panels with layers of tapered insulation + coverboard installed in hot roofing asphalt, and a new fully adhered 80-mil nominal thickness thermoplastic-polyolefin membrane installed on top, along with new sheet metal flashings + accessories to provide a complete, watertight 30-year warrantable roof assembly.
All energy positive schools are designed to produce more energy than they consume while incorporating an energy efficient building envelope to minimize utility usage
